Audacity is an Open Source sound editor and recorder developed by the community and released under the GNU General Public License.
It is a project that allows all of us to benefit with lots of features, and an easy to use interface where it is possible to record sounds from a microphone or import files that are already in the hard drive of a computer.
Some of its features include: record from a microphone, line, or other sources with up to 16 simultaneous channels, import and export WAV, AIFF, AU, Ogg Vorbis files, create WAV or AIFF files to be stored in an audio CD, sound edit: cut, copy, paste, delete with unlimited undo and redo, edit and mix an unlimited number of tracks, a variety of sound effects that include echo, crossfade in and out, tempo, volume adjustments, and more.
I recommend this program to anyone who wants to edit or record sounds and audio files. If you are a beginner, it would be a good idea to download the stable (1.2) version, but if you want to try all the new features this is a good option. Audacity is a good example of the great quality Open Source offers to all of us for free.
